Document Summary

Lining structure of digestive system correlates with f(x)"s of digestive organs. There are special processes for digesting carbohydrates, lipids & proteins. There are special processes for absorbing carbohydrates, lipids & proteins. Due to unique structures of these macromolecules: lipids are fat-soluble = hydrophobic, proteins & carbs need transporters to cross membranes. General structure of digestive system lining: mucosa innermost tunic. Made of mucous epithelium, lamina propria and muscularis mucosae. Resist abrasion in mouth, esophagus & anus. Absorbs and secretes in stomach and intestine: submucosa lies outside of mucosa. Thick layer of loose ct w nerves, blood vessels and small glands. Also contains plexus (network of nerve cell processes) which are innervated by autonomic nerves: muscularis. Made of circular smooth muscle (inner) and longitudinal smooth muscle (outer) with a plexus in between = enteric ns. Enteric ns (autonomic division) controls mixing, movement & secretion in digestive tract: serosa outermost tunic. Serous membrane; visceral peritoneum (smooth epithelial layer) or adventitia in replacement.
