Models/maps of communication can be very elaborate. 1940 - period in north american history when communication programs & departments first being established at colleges & universities. Many of models - limited & perhaps misleading at times. First models to be looked at - diff from one another. But all deal w/ common communicational issues & problems. Q"s give rise to way of thinking about communication focusing on. Early communication researchers had less interest in what was being communicated than in how message was. Main focus of diff communication models to be examined more on process rather than content. Common way to think about communication - sometimes has clearly identifiable source. E. g. in lecture, info flows from one agent another (from teacher to student) Monological communication - referred to as one-to-many communication event. Monologue - occurs when single person speaks. One of most basic forms of communication processes we encounter.
