Dangerous offences (do) & long-term offenders (lto) designations. S. 718 of criminal code: denunciation of conduct, deter future offending, protect society, rehabilitate offender, reparation for harm done, accountability for actions. Sentences should reflect: seriousness, degree of responsibility, aggravating or mitigating factors, similar to other similar cases, not unduly harsh. Utilitarian goals future conduct of offender. Retributive goals focused on the past: general deterrence, specific deterrence, rehabilitation. Sentencing options (less serious crimes to serious crimes) Discharges: absolute no penalty, no criminal record, police can only hold record for 6 months, conditional probation, to keep peace, deemed never to have been convicted. Suspended sentence: convicted of offence, passing of sentence is suspended, if successful completion of probation. Probation: placed under surveillance, max of three years, two years if young offender. Conditional sentence: receive term of confinement, get to serve in your own home.
