Involved in community residents and banded together and policed the area. 1600s= when you see the first police constables (first formal) *police starts in one area and expands. Took a while to move to northern canda. Tax collection, night watchmen, chimney and building inspection, and bailiffs (tasks that they did were for the betterment of the community overall) Police relations with community has gone downhill (at this point there was a lot of trust, as police progress today, there is now a lot of distrust) Provincial police forces (had a lot of abuse of power) 1 in 5 officers are female (statistics same in terms of race and ethnicity) Larger component of cjs (most well funded component) Activity (they are supposed to help members in community) Created by statute (set out who they are and what they can do) Do have a broad mandate (protecting and serving, there"s maintain the peace as well)
