Document Summary

A collection of cells of the same type that performs a common function. Cells in tissues are held together by junctions. Creates an impermeable junction that prevents the exchange of materials between cells. Found between epithelial cells of the digestive tract, where they prevent digestive enzymes from entering the blood. Found in tissues that are often stretched such as the skin. Allows cells to communicate by allowing small molecules and ions to pass from cell to cell. Lymphocyte- move through blood stream, enter into tissues and find invaders to prevent infections, small and mobile. Neuron- stationary cell, communicate between different parts of body. Interact with other cells in the neuron system. 3 main types of connective tissue: fibrous- lose, dense, supportive- cartilage, bone, fluid- blood, lymph. Mast cell- release chemicals after an injury. Ground substance- fill spaces between cells and fibers. Stem cells- divides to produce other cells. 3 types are distinguished by types of fibers.
