Many less developed countries made democratic transitions b/w 1980-2000. Only minority succeeded in forming stable consolidated democracy. Democratic transition - process of change involving abandoning authoritarian gov for democratic rule. However, we easily forget the democratization has been under way for more than 200 years in the democracies of northwestern europe & north america. To expect africa, asia & latin america to cover same distance in decade/generation - unrealistic. Control & colonization of most of world by european powers often left third world countries ill-prepared for governing after becoming independent. Cold war & more recently, concerns about international terrorism have kept powerful countries intervening in politics of third world. Nevertheless, ever more countries - offering citizens increasingly accountable, honest & efficient govs. Signifies progress toward building states pursuing common good. There have been 2 major free-market models.
