Ch 6 - case studies and observational research. An in-depth analysis of an individual, social unit, or event. An article or whole book may be devoted to one case study. Can serve as the basis for uncovering relationships. Can serve as the basis for theory development. Can serve as to contradict or refute a theory. Can be used to provide support or validation for experimental research. Insight into the possible causes of behaviour and lead to hypotheses that are tested using other research methods. Case studies can test hypotheses and provide evidence that supports or contradicts a theory. Provide support for the external validity of findings obtained in experiments or other research. Difficulty of drawing clear and causal conclusions. The potential for observer bias when researchers have expectations or other predispositions that distort their observations.
