PSYC 358 Lecture 4: Psych 358 – Language and Social interaction
Document Summary
Lecture 1 may 13, 2016: what is discourse analysis. How people use language in their everyday lives to accomplish things, to influence behavior etc. Discourse means talking and what we are doing is analyzing talking. Social aspects rather than cognitive aspects of language. We are looking at language use, and coordination of meaning. We are interested in people talking and how they individuals talk to one another. Language is highly organized and what we are looking at is how that organization is. Who we are as people, and how we use language. Our language is who we are: from an analytic view to describe what is usually ignored (which is everyday language) regarding everyday use of language. To see how people co-construct meaning in their everyday lives. What implicit rules we use are often unexamined. Language doesn"t demonstrate who we are, it is who we are. The formal and communicative are often presented as opposition.
