Document Summary

Chapter 7: performance and motor control characteristics of functional skill. Fitts" law outside of the lab: open- and closed- loop motor control processes, role of visual information. Focused more on speed than on accuracy: ex: pushing the call button on a elevator, threading a needle, reaching out for a drink, etc. Speed is determined by the performer (versus skills where the speed is de- termined by the skill itself, ie: throwing a baseball, typing, etc. ) Predicts movement time for aiming movement (that requires both speed and accuracy) Role of visual information: preparation phase, i"m going to perform this skill , this skill requires speed-accuracy trade-off, regulatory conditions assessed using vision. Initial flight phase: moves the limb in the direction of the target, open-loop control, vision plays a minor role during this phase, acquires limb displacement, velocity, time-to-contact informa- tion, termination phase, vision is important in this phase.
