Federal:

Provides principles for health care for Canadians
Provincial:
Provincial and territorial plans (13 ways to provide health care)
Each province or territories responsible for regulation or health professions
Determine how health is structured and what is funded
Each has a ministry/department of health headed by elected MLA staffs by
civil servants
Federal legislation Relevant for nurses
Food and drug (nurses cannot give things that are not approved for use in
Canada)
Medical marijuana
Medical assisted dying (the way the nurses manage that are provincial)
The controlled drugs and substances Act
Just because federally they approve something provincially they need to set things
up and create policies
Health in Nova Scotia provincial legislation
There are so many and we do not need to know them all but there are many
for all different scenarios
Nursing legislation doesn’t govern anything you also must follow all the
other legislations too
Ex. Vital statistics Act: you must sign birth certificates, and death certificates
etc.
Specific nursing legislation in NS
Registered nurses act
Registered nurses regulations
And acts/regulations applicable to where they work too e.g. Hospital act;
homes for special care act etc.
