Week 7 Legal Issues: Self-Regulation and Collective Bargaining
Regulation: Establishing and enforcing rules to govern behavior of people or
groups. Intended to safeguard the public in some way
Self- regulation: approach the government for legislation to govern their own
profession. Ex. Nurses regulate nurses
It is the strictest form of regulation: the individual members regulate themselves
and they regulate their own members to ensure public from harm. (The only way
that you can call yourself a nurse is if you are a nurse and go through education, it is
a legally protected title. You can publically look up nurses)
Self-regulation required a regulatory body →created by legislation enacted by
the provincial and territorial governments
• CRNNS are regulators and they have the legal authority to establish, monitor,
and enforce standards of education and practice
