Document Summary

Science has four goals: description, prediction, control, and explanation. Recap = critical thinking: systematically questioning and evaluating informa- tion using well-supported evidence; an ability, a skill. Freud"s theory that dreams represent the fulfillment of an unconscious wish is neither proved nor disproved, so it is criticized for not being falsifiable. Dogmatic clinging to our assumptions even without adequate evidence. Dogmatists treated old people through inferring from old theories where sickness comes from, and developing cures from these theories. Observed sick people and analyzed what makes them feel better or worse. Modern empiricists argue that only accurate and good knowledge comes o o o o from observations. Scientific method based on the notion of empiricism. Gather empirical evidence (evidence from the five senses) See if evidence fits with what we understand of the world theories. Need to start with a question and test the theories with evidence.
