Rel 265 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Messiah In Judaism, Parable Of The Lost Sheep, Sadducees
Document Summary
He is writing to an audience that is probably part of his jewish-christian sect. He takes the gospel in mark and clarifies it, fixes it up. He connects the story of jesus with the entire narrative of jewish history. The fact that matthew creates the infancy narrative, and introduces the char- acter of joseph in order to situate christ within the lineage of david. Mark does not deal with jesus" birth. Mark presents jesus as one who is adopted by god the father at his baptism. In paul we have no mention of je- sus being born of a virgin. Paul says something almost ridiculous: that jesus was born of a woman. In the 80s, we have matthew, who is the first to come up with something. Regardless of what happened in the way that he was conceived, it was all planned by god. Even in the midst of something ugly, god can still work through the holy spirit.
