What is the structure of modern authority (traditional vs. modern) Traditional: form of authority that is everyday routine. Patriarchal authority taking husbands last name, dad"s" chair instills lines of authority. Charismatic authority (hitler, kennedy, obama, mlk) charming, presence/magic, intense, inspirational: cadence, articulate, presenting basic/moral message, confidence, social phenomenon, emergence of power out of social movements, not reducible to person alone, it"s a sentiment/feeling attached to person. Rational legal authority dominates in the modern period. More solidified way of identifying you than flesh and blood. Modernity passive way of making people participate in bureaucracy. No one person in control social (impersonal) norms are. Who is the authority? (for all these rules and regulations) Everyone is a small part of the whole.
