Document Summary

Solnit: anarchist they believe that if we have no social structures people will know how to continue to live using anarchy. Karl marx believed that if social structure and society shape the way people behave and not by nature, that we could change the way everyone behaves. Cooperative groups will outlast non cooperative groups. Pre-existing order: government and state: leadership and hierarchy - external coercion, capitalist economy: based on private property, risk of theft, money exchange: numerically calculated, exploitation. No external structure: emergent order: self-government without leaders, gift economy: common property, ethic of sharing, gift exchange, mutual aid. Ostracism: exclude the trouble person, evict them from the group, perhaps maybe kill them in certain circumstances. When working in a cooperative group, you need help from others, therefore if you are being excluded from the group they will not help you hunt and protect yourself so you may starve or be killed.
