Once you"re on welfare, it is very difficult to get off. Poverty is general scarcity, dearth, or the state of one who lacks a certain amount of material possessions or money. It is a multifaceted concept, which includes social, economic, and political elements. Poverty may be defined as either absolute or relative. 1 in 7 canadians live in poverty (about 5 million people) 17% of women in canada live in poverty. 29% of visible minority women live in poverty. 21% of single mothers in canada raise their children in poverty. And single mothers are the poorest of the poor. Women are paid less than men, even when they have the same qualifications and work the same hours (women earn 77% of what men make) Women are segregated into low paying occupations, and occupations domi- nated by women are low paid (teaching, cleaning, waitressing etc)
