Pharmacology: the study of drugs and their interactions with living systems (anatomy, physiology, chemistry, microbiology) Drug: any chemical that can affect living processes (something that changes something in your body) Recreational drug: a drug used without medical justification for its psychoactive effects (weed, alcohol, oxi, cocaine, caffeine ) Medication: a substance used in treating disease or relieving pain (insulin, advil, acetaminophen ) Clinical pharmacology: study of drugs/medications in humans (effect, amount, safety, administration ) The use of drugs to: diagnose, prevent, or treat disease; prevent pregnancy; reduce symptoms/pain. Selectivity: drug elicits only the response for which it is given. Pharmacokinetics: how the body handles the drug, kidney eliminates drug. Pharmacodynamics: how the drug affects the body (ex: drug response/ tolerance/individual variability) How well a drug sticks to albumin which makes the drug not useful (can"t go to target) Over-the-counter medications: widely available, used to be prescription, behind the counter. Equivalent dose to proprietary drugs: proprietary name.
