Book as object and consumer product (printing press) Nothing but a shapeless lump, but the material is still pliable, capable of assuming any form, and you must so mould it (erasmus, on liberal education for children, 1529) A sturdy book that children could handle. Primary purpose to teach children the alphabet. Primary to teach children how to read. Newbery award is now given out to books. He is the father of contemporary literature. Worked very hard to promote children"s literature as respectable. Worked to make it a business, wanted to make money. First one to do book and movie tie ins. Book came with a free toy (balls for boys and pin cushions for girl) First time for marketing toys with books. Consumed by adults but bought for children (the adult"s choice of which book the child reads) Books used for learning how to read and spell. Book made out of wood so you can move around the letters.
