SOCI 1001H Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Sociological Theory, Deductive Reasoning, Programming Paradigm
Document Summary
Sociological investigation is an approach to human inquiry about how we find out what is going on beyond the obvious. Most of what we know is common sense, but common sense varies from person to person so it can be contradictory. Sociologists show where common sense is right and where it is wrong in order to move beyond it: ex. Romantic love concept varies between cultures; different reasons for marriage in different societies. Feelings and thoughts are shaped by society, but they are not always true. Common sense is based on a belief and common agreement. Learning to accept what everyone else knows is how we are better integrated into society. Scientific approach takes scientific principles and applies them to the social world. The same principles of the scientific approach can be applied to physical science but we apply it to the social world instead. Is one way of moving on and beyond common sense.
