SOCI 1001H Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Symbolic Interactionism, Critical Role, Reference Group
Document Summary
If new generations do not learn its way of life, it ceases to exist. For canadian culture to continue, for example, children must learn about cultural values related to democracy: they have to learn the norms of voting, as well as how to use material objects such as a ballot. Nature vs nurture: nurture the relationship caring that surrounds us, nature - according to this belief, our temperaments, interests, and talents are set before birth. Some studies followed identical twins who were raised separately. The pairs shared the same genetics, but, in some cases, were socialized in different ways. Social groups often provide the first experiences of socialization. Family: mothers and fathers, siblings and grandparents, plus members of an extended family, all teach a child what he or she needs to know. Sociologists recognize that race, social class, religion, and other societal factors play an important role in socialization.
