English 3310 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Everyman, Speculative Fiction, Comity
Document Summary
This was his most enduring work, and is still well read. It was first published in 1726, and had a much more lengthy title. It helped to establish the book, and to advertise the book within the title. Changes were made to it by his publisher and his friends, so it was not published as he wanted it originally. Things were change for it to become less controversial politically. However, it is important to note that it was republished by george faulkner, his friend, and this is the text that is the basis of most modern editions. It was closer to what swift wanted originally. It was also read widely, by men, women, and children. It did some of the things that robinson cruoesoe did, being an adventure of a no-place. It had allusions to both past, current, and future events, in how it treats human nature, and what it means to be human and live in society.
