Document Summary

These are useful tools to helps us speak about literature periods. The victorians, despite having the highest number of sex workers, claimed to be very moralistic, which expanded to their literature and the like. It was expected that life morals should be in literature, and not necessarily the real world. The negative was that it was focused around moral improvement, which is something that cannot be done. Literature can produce a moral goodness, then you cannot write anything dark or real. Their form of realism is something different to what we think of it now. Realism is supposed to be an accurate portrayal of life. There is always something fantastic about story telling. The whole notion of a narrative is not realistic. Essentially, a book is a wall of text, not real life. The only thing that is realistic, is real life. It tends to be an attempt at suspending the readers disbelief, and that this is not shattered.
