Document Summary

The term is used in a doubled way. She is invoking the concept of design as a blueprint, and design as a pattern left behind. There can be a grand design for our lives, preordained. The second is that there is a pattern left behind, an imprint on something. There is a semicolon on how it pivots. In the first half, she deliberately says his steps leave behind a design" Or rather a design results from his journey" It speaks to how a story is written. The ultimate story is the one that is greater than the sum of its parts. An author can be seen as designing ones narratives by producing a design from a blueprint. A biographer might be seen as recognizing a pattern that has been left behind in somebody"s life. This is a novel, but it is based on something that happened. It is biography and fiction at the same time.
