Document Summary

The author was born in the uk and lived in america, but was of indian decent. Indo-anglican; somebody who is of indian decent in an english country, or somebody in britain. Anglo-indian: this is the old term, but the issue is that anglo comes before indian. This is just one book among many about cultural identity. Cultural national context are important to understanding the significance of some of the events in the story. We know that there is going to be a power cut, which is important in significance because we don"t know where it is set, but we know that it is in the west. They are experiencing something in america that they would often experience in india; it is an implied connection to home. This sets off the action, but part the point is that cultural and national context changes a normal everyday event into something that create a link to a different land and people.
