From the fall of the roman empire to the protestant reformation, western europe and parts of eastern were catholic. According to 1215, the council, the catholic chruch was established as the one universal church of the faithful outside of which nobody at all could be saved. You needed to be under this faith umbrella in order to be saved. The church authority were responsible, year after year, to tell you and guide you on to get into heaven. Those who prayed in society, were no less important than those who laboured. Religion was thus engrained on every part of everyday life. The english goodbye, french audeiu, etc, all come from the phrase god be with you" Those who prayed were considered integral, because this was one"s key to heaven. The priest in a village would be the only person who would keep time, often the only person who could read.
