Document Summary

There was a recognition of american character began with the closing of the frontier. The manifest destiny in 1839 described an old ideal; the belief that american settlers had a god given right to spread out and take land. In 1893, frederick jackson turner wrote the sky of the frontier in american history, that outlined his views on how the frontier shaped american being and characteristics. He claimed that it was gone, and that without it, the us would thus lose its identity. This was important, as it contributed to the west through romanticism. Those who supported the frontier feared that without it, men would go soft. Theodore roosevelt was a major player in pursuing the wild west. After his first wife died, he went wet and spent time on a ranch. He thus emerged as a cowboy and advocate for frontier values. He would write a series of books that glorified the west.
