Document Summary

Treaty of utrecht - acadia becomes a british possession after the war of the spanish succession. Governor phipps administers oath of allegiance to acadians. Acadia is present day nova scotia, pei, and new brunswick. It didn"t pay a lot of attention to acadia. Acadia thus didn"t have a lot of connection to either france or quebec. This then means that there was a very distinctive culture. Many of the settlers who came to acadian in the early years, came from one part of france, which was different. This meant that when they got to acadia, they didn"t go and cut down trees, they reclaimed the dykes to reclaim the marshes. The bay of fundy flooded these dykes twice daily. This meant hit they got really fertile land. These were drainage ditched and the aboirteau was a hinged valve that prevented salt water flow into the fields.
