HIST 2102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Scientific Revolution, Nicolaus Copernicus, Geocentric Model
Document Summary
The people alive at the time didn"t know they were part of a scientific revolution. This is one of the huge factors why the revolution would occur. He questioned authority, which opened the door for others. He deduced from eclipses that the sun must be very big and very far away. He then decided that the sun was most likely at the centre of the universe instead of the earth, developing a heliocentric view of the world. He claimed that the earth rotated, which was the motion of the moon and stars across the sky. He also claimed the stars are very, very far away. They said that they could see the sun moving across the sky, and therefore, this wasn"t right. He was not the first to come up with the theory of geocentrism, or the idea that the earth is the centre of the universe.
