At the end of wwi, many american hopes for a return to normalcy. In world affairs, normalcy meant a return to isolation for many. This was because millions of americans had come to believe that participation in wwi had been a mistake. Getting involved in the war was driven merely by financial interests. After the nye hearings, 70% of americans surveyed believed tat they should have stayed out. Congress decided to pass a series of neutrality acts between 1935 and 1937. They outlawed armed sales and loans to nations at war. Because of these acts, the us remained mostly aloft from issues developing within europe. Many americans also looked at the racist dictators as more ridiculous over threatening to their interests. Isolation seemed like a sound forge in policy. They believed that they were geographically isolated, with two oceans to protect them from any threat.
