Document Summary

Proposals for some sort of a british north american unity hadn"t worked out before. However, there would be outside factors and internal factors to help bring them together. The american civil war and the fear of annexation. This broke out in 1861 with the successor of the south. One of the reasons canada was worried was that britain and canada had been tense with america during the civil war. Even though british north americans were loud about slavery, they weren"t as loud about the unionists as one might expect. French canada could identify with the south as a minority being treated badly by northern english industrialists. English canada wasn"t too excited about american republicanism. They also agreed they it would be easier to live with a divided america over a unified one. The south had a warship built in britain. They weren"t supposed to as they were neutral.
