Unemployment rate was over 30%, if not more. There was collapse in both manufacturing and in agriculture. Canada was only trading with the us and britain, who were also having a depression. You had to pay to be in the hospital, etc. It was thought that youth were the most vulnerable. This was because they were unable to start a career, and they might be unable to be married. This was important for men, as they were expected to be the breadwinners. You simply didn"t get married without the man having a job. There were plenty of long engagements, postponed marriages, or broken engagements. There was the worry that people were going to be unable to marry at all. It was frowned upon for a man to marry a woman older than him. Women who didn"t get married between 18-22, it was feared they would loose their attractiveness and youth.
