The name the gulag archipelago was coined by aleksandr solzhenistsyn, being so big it was like its own island/ The camps were supposed to be humanitarian, but this simply didn"t happen. Late in the 1920"s, they were renamed corrective labour camps . In russia before the revolution, the russian prison system before was brutal. They became the primary chanel for the soviet state wanting to punish people. The first camps were made during the summer of 1918. Early in their existence, the idea was to isolate and break their morale, by guiding them and forcing them to work . they were a simple and inexpensive way to deal with enemies. More people would be sent to the camps than executed. There was the phenomenon of the special settler . They were not technically prisoners, but they were exiled. Officially, they had the same rights as free workers.
