Born in 1894 to a poor peasant family in ukraine. At the age of 15 he abandoned rural life and went to the mining town of iuzovka in the don bass. After the russian revolution, they decided that they didn"t want their town named after a welsh mining engineer, and has now become donetsk. He was good at mining, even though he had no background in education. He was responsible for operating elevators, and thus, was exempt from military service wwi. Soon he was district party secretary, and was very able. In 1931 he was then brought to moscow. By 1935, he was party secretary for moscow, the most sr position. From 1935 - 1938, he was in a sr position, and was largely responsible for purging the province of moscow. he signed many execution orders himself. By 1938, stalin regarded him as one of his most trusted person, and thus, sent to ukraine to purge that party.
