Socialism really emerged in russia in the 1860"s after the emancipation act. The serfs and intelligentsia were disappointed in it. N. g chernyshevsky (1828-1889) was big in spreading totalitarian socialism, he believed in science. Done was written one year after the emancipation act. It was a novel that was flat characterization, but politically it was very significant.
