NEUR 2600 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Middle Cerebral Artery, Anterior Cerebral Artery, Posterior Cerebral Artery
Document Summary
3 major parts: neocortex, basal ganglia, limbic cortex. A baby can be born without a forebrain (acephalic) or with a small brain (microcephalic). Christopher walsh and ganesh mochida found the gene (beta-catenin) that when mutated, causes the brain to be smaller than usual. With over expressing the gene, the mouse brain grows to almost double the usual size. Protection of the brain: skull, dura, arachnoid, and pia matter, ventricles 1-4 filled with cerebral spinal fluid (csf, surrounds the brain and cushions the movement of the brain within the skull, ventricles: There are 2 lateral ventricles in either hemisphere and a 3rd and 4th that lie in the midline of the brain. Csf is made in the cells that line these ventricles. A condition in which the flow of csf in the 4th ventricle is blocked, causing a buildup of pressure in the brain and swelling of the head that can result in retardation.
