Document Summary

We are constantly boarded by the media, and told what we are supposed to look like. In the 60"s and 70"s, north america became enamoured with a very thin, emaciated, teenage boy look. Twiggy was the first person to do this. The standards have changed - marilyn used to be the idea. Now, the trend is towards the thinner, leaner female body shape (1950"s - 2000"s), and actresses like kiera knightley. Miss universe is also an example of this changing ideal. the weights of winners have been steadily dropping. However, their heigh is increasing, but their weight is dropping. A similar trend is seen for miss america contestants and playboy centerfolds. 65% of centrefolds, and 60% of miss america contestants, were under the percent of expected body weight, under. However, the average body weigh is increasing steadily. So media is telling us that there is a perfect average of beauty, but that ideal just is not there.
