The person"s own belief saying they will be punished if they engage in this action. Sanctions are not enforced by members of the groups, but by the individuals themselves. Exists in all societies: formal social control [external] Sanctions are imposed by a third party within the group. The adjudicator just doesn"t believe they are guilty, and doesn"t burn him. If their guilty, take the hungry and mad snake. If their not guilty, take the snake that had eaten recently. 2: ordeals only work if people believe that person has a gift o modern example is the polygraph test.
