Document Summary
Relative dating older/younger relative to something else. Numeric dating based on lab techniques that assign age to material evidence. Law of (stratigraphic) superposition: layers (strata) on the bottom must be older than the ones on top. Law of crosscutting relationships: messed up strata, younger strata cut through older ones, reality. Biostratigraphic dating: same strata can be found in many different locations; relies on patterns of fossil distribution in different rock layers. Best kind of fossils for relative dating: those that evolved rapidly and spread out over large area. Assemblage: artifacts and structures from a particular time and place in archeological site. Frequency seriation: used to measure change in artifact percentage in relation to others. Isotopic methods: based on scientific knowledge about the rate at which various radioactive isotopes of naturally occurring elements decay into other elements by losing subatomic particles. Isotope: same # of protons but different # of neutrons.
