Increase in protestantism (flanders = modern day belgium, was populated by extreme protestants [calvinists]) Statues + other things were now seen as being idol worship, so they moved away from this. / everyday life painting + still life + memento mori paintings. > things/places were combined (to create the most ideal scene) vs. > increase in topographical paintings of cities were being produced. > city can be the subject matter for paintings (increased map making as well) There was a shift in the art market. > art could now be bought by the middle class as well. > jewish cemetery = broken trees + branches, ruined church/building, memento mori msg: you must lead a proper protestant life to have a good life. > rainbow + luxorious growth & green behind brokenness msg: there is hope for the afterlife + salvation.
