Document Summary

Evolution: change in allele frequencies in a population over time ex=out of, volve=unfurling, unrolling. Artificial selection (such as breeding dogs for certain traits) All cultures have explanations for why things are the way they are. Even though they are mostly based in religion, some early observations are still relevant, such as fossils. Greek philosophers were the first to have natural explanations" -explanations based in the natural, not spiritual world. Anaximander thought the first organisms spontaneously generated in water, and then moved to land as the grew older, and humans burst from the shells on their backs. Anaxagoras thought a perceptive spirit made life but did nothing to guide or change it after. Democritus thought that increasing order in a system was a natural byproduct of the smallest particles (which he called atoms) *note that all of these philosophers believed that there was no divine purpose for life to begin, that it was random.
