NURS215 Lecture 4: Lecture 4 - GI
Document Summary
Accessory organs : salivary glands, liver, pancreas ph in stomach : acidic (2) ph in duodenum : alkaline (7) Changes because the pancreatic juice and bile (both alkaline) ow in there. Digestion : movement of food (peristalsis in the stomach and intestines) and absorption (small intestines) and then reabsorption of water (large intestine) More time for reabsorption = body reabsorbs more water. Most common in elderly (meds that decrease peristalsis, medications) and the immobile (on bed rest) Danger : stool will eventually back up and block the gi tract. Absorption problem, may clear before there is time for water to reabsorb. Water, drugs, nutrients and electrolytes are lost (not reabsorbed) *prevention of constipation is best, because too many laxatives could cause the gi tract to forget how to do its function. Caused by increased time for reabsorption of water. Reasons for constipation (in a continuing care facility) Water intake : caffeine (in small amounts) is good for you.
