NURS405A Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Necrosis, Extracellular Fluid, Gel
Document Summary
Provide protection to the fragile graunulating tissue while allowing the interstitial fluid and moisture from the wound to evaporate. Contact layer can remain undisturbed while a secondary cover dressing can be changed as needed (when saturated or soiled) Petroleum jelly contact layer dressings (tulle (paraffin)) Important for wound healing to allow these contact layer dressings to remain in place for a number of days and change the secondary dressing only as needed. Functions as an atraumatic wound contact layer. Removal without causing trauma to the wound bed or the periwound skin. Different types of soft silicone dressings are wound contact layers (useful for skin tears), absorbent dressings for exudating wounds. Useful in dealing with fungating wounds or any wound where periwound skin is fragile. Wound contact layer of dressing forms a gel as fluid is absorbed and maintains a moist healing environment. Supports healing in clean granulating wounds, autolytically debridge necrotic wounds.
