The retina: when you look at the inside surface, called the retina, you notice a million or so cells. There are different types of cells rods, and cones. Also, these are not distributed evenly across the retina. As you move out of the fovea, density of cones drops. 7 degrees away from the fovea, no cones at all. Cones are used for central vision and rods are used for peripheral vision. There are no photoreceptors on the optic nerve, and hence, this is known as the blind spot. Our brain is accommodating for the reconstruction of missing information. One of the interesting themes of the chapter is that a lot of our perception is constructed. At a very low level, we have a blind spot in our eyes and the brain is reconstructing that information. Vision in the central is different from the peripheral. Rods: don"t have high visual acuity but high sensitivity.
