Document Summary
Psych 104 lecture #18 sensation and perception pt. Perceiving depth of distance: depth perception: interpretation of visual cues that indicate how near or far away objects area, monocular depth cues, pictorial depth cues. Linear perspective: parallel lines converge or angle toward each other as they recede into distance. Interposition: objects closer to us cut off part of our view of more distant objects. Ship 8 km offshore (closer to horizon, appears in higher plane) vs ship 1 km from shore. Clarity: see things more clearly when nearby. Relative size: 2 objects have similar size, one that is smaller will be judged to be further away: motion parallax. If we are moving, nearby objects appear to move faster in opposite directions than faraway ones: binocular depth cues, binocular disparity. Produced by projection of slightly different images of an object on the retinas of 2 eyes.
