Lecture 6: history of childhood and youth: the next generation. We tend to think of childhood and youth as inherent unchanging categories but postman argues our idea is only 400 years old (at best) Postman to an extent dispels this, we see childhood as something that has biological and social components. Tracing what childhood is, and not necessarily a biological category, there are social components. Last class we covered a good bit of the history of childhood from 1440 to 1800. 10 to 20 years old as a distinct period of life. Gillis places the discovery of adolescence around 1870-1900. Middle class boys were subjected to strict school discipline. Middle class - parents want them to become successful merchants (subjected to strict discipline) Idea of puberty emerged as a way of understanding and acknowledging juvenile sexuality. Victorian era - sex and society becomes very important, strict rules around sexuality development. Youth and juvenile society needs to be channelled from young.
