ANTH 311 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Sociogram, Operational Sex Ratio, Biological Specificity
Document Summary
Themes: distinguish between the different elements of social groups, social units, social structure, social organization, mating unit. Social unit: a set of conspecific animals that interact regularly and more so with each other than with other individuals. Social structure: the patterns of social interactions and resulting relationships. Often described as a socio-gram (female or non-female bonded). Mating unit or mating system: the individuals that mate within a social unit. Extra-group copulations: females that mate with males outside of their social unit which leads to extra-group paternities. Why is there variation in social systems: many species show both um-mf and mm-mf social unity, seems to depend on the number of females in the group and the degree to which their repro- ductively synchronized.
