Took off in the dutch republic at the end of the 16th, into the 17th century. Traditionally, they had a very static quality to them because artists tended to group all the figures around a banquet scene. Each portrait would be painted individually and paid for by each sitter. Didn"t allow for a lot of dynamism to the composition - very little sense of movement or space being articulated in the background. Paintings like rembrandt"s would have hung in the banquet or main hall in the headquarters of the civic militia group: rembrandt gains the commission at the height of his fame. They are a little off centre in the image because the image was cut from the top and sides when it was moved from the hall.
