The Franklin Expedition
Headed by sir john franklin- a naval officer. Explored looking for a NW passage. Local hero in
britain.
Franklin expedition- to find northwest passage- quicker, easier to get to far east. Ships outfitted
with steel hulls to cut through the ice. Stocked with provisions for three years, outfitted with
advanced technological equipment. Mission was set up for success. Left in May 1845, last seen
in july 1845 and were never seen again. It took three years to launch a rescue expedition-
launched by Lady Franklin. Started to find controversial evidence- cannibalism.
A future expedition that was successful completed the route with a small boat and a small crew
and it took five years. The Franklin expedition was only equipped for three years.
First winter was at Beechey Island- three men buried there.
Men died of zinc deficiency, which led to immune suppression
North America
People came to north america from northern asia across the Bering Strait- the water level may
have been lowered, exposing the continental shelf, most sites will be located under the water.
People also may have travelled by water along the shore of the continental shelf.
St Mary’s (southern alberta)- evidence of prehistoric animals, killed using paleoindian

Newell made a lot of money from people coming to see the giant. PT Barnum got involved,
wanted the statue to be travelling with the circus. Newell started to brag about how he had
tricked everyone. The scientific community took notice and investigated, the giant turned out to
be made of soft gypsum, probably had only been buried one year prior to the ‘discovery’.
Kennewick Man- discovered on border of washington and oregon in the columbus river. 9000
year old spearpoint found embedded in the skeleton. James Chatters investigated the find, did
facial reconstruction of the skull and found that it looked just like Jean-Luc Picard. SAid that it
was possibly not native american, it might have been northern european in origin, led to a huge
legal and political battle over who gets to ‘claim’ the remains, and who the individual actually
was. DNA analysis has helped to clarify these kids of dilemmas. Grave repatriation act- if
