Animals ingest food, diegest it in specialized compartments, absorb nutrients, and eliminate waste. Food is processed sequentially in the mouth, stomach, and small intestine where nutrients are absorbed. A healthy diet fuels activities, provides organic building blocks, and provides nutrients a body cannot manufacture. Suspension feeders- sift small organisms or food particles from water ex. tentacles. Substrate feeders- live in or on their food source and eat through it ex. caterpillar. Fluid feeders- suck nutrient-rich fluids from a living host ex. mosquito. Bulk feeders- ingest large pieces of food ex. Chemical digestion- we break down molecules to build our own. Hydra: digestive enzymes being released from a gland cell, food digested to small particles, food particle engulfed, food particle digested in a food vacuole. Alimentary canal- digestive tract with 2 openings, specialized regions for digestion and absorption. Cecum- full of gut bacteria to help digest food.
