BIOL 313 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Samalog, Mechanical Equilibrium, Intraspecific Competition
Document Summary
One species competitively excludes the other to the point the other species becomes extinct in the local habitat. Alpha is a measure of the effect of species 2 on the growth rate of species 1. If alpha = 1, then individuals of the two species are interchangeable and changing their abundance does not affect the growth of alpha. If alpha = 4, each individual of species 2 added depresses the growth of species 1 by the same amount as adding 4 individuals of species 1. If alpha > 1, the per capita effect of interspecific competition is greater than the per capita effect of intraspecific competition. If 0 < alpha < 1, infraspecific competition is more important. Meaning, adding more individuals of species 2 would have less impact than adding more individuals of species 1. If alpha = 0, there is no competitive effect.
